Description:
Porcelain bowl with underglaze blue decoration. This ‘min yao’ bowl has deep rounded sides, an everted bracket-lobed rim and a tapering foot. It is painted inside in pale underglaze blue with a crow on a rock inside a medallion with butterflies, insects and stylized fruiting and flowering plants in the well. Outside there is a bird flying and another perched on rocks, separated by bamboo and tree peonies.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Although dating ‘min yao’ blue-and-white wares is difficult because of the probable prolonged use of similar designs, this bowl can be dated by stylistic comparison to a smaller cup with similar decoration, which was recovered from the cargo of the Witte Leeuw which sank in 1613 (see BM 1921.1107.1 ).
