Description:
Porcelain Lianzi [lotus-seed] bowl with underglaze blue decoration. Similar to BM 1939.0518.1, this lianzi [lotus-seed] bowl has deep conical sides which emerge from a very narrow foot ring and curve slightly inwards at the rim. The glazed base rises to a central nipple. Beneath a pure blue-white glaze it is painted in dark cobalt blue. Inside in the centre is a stylized leafy flower surrounded by a band of key-fret. This is encircled by overlapping looped lines and a band of classic scroll in the inner rim. Outside around the rim is a band of simple key-fret. Eight individual lappets radiate from the foot ring, overlapping a Middle Eastern-style scroll which reaches trefoil points between the lappets. The base is glazed.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:European oil paintings of pre-seventeenth-century date depicting Chinese porcelains are rare. One painted c. 1460-70, representing the Madonna and Child, is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington; it is believed to be by Francesco Benaglio (1432-c.1492). A bowl of the present type, containing figs, is shown in the painting on a table to the right of Mary and Jesus. It is possible that the bowl depicted is the Xuande version (see BM 1952.0513.2) or an Islamic copy of the Chinese bowl. The appearance of this bowl in such a painting is an indication of the high regard in which Europeans held Chinese porcelain in the fifteenth century.
