Description:
Porcelain bowl with underglaze blue decoration. This bowl has rounded sides and a straight foot. Inside, in a medallion, a dragon is depicted full-frontal on a blue ground and the rim is painted with a band of waves. Outside a design of a basket of flowers and butterflies is repeated four times and the rim shows alternating phoenix pursuing a lotus and dragon chasing a flaming pearl. Below is a border of clouds separated by zigzag lines. On the base is a six-character Wanli reign with three drilled holes arranged in triangular formation, suggesting that this bowl, prior to its entry into the Museum in the late nineteenth century, was once in a Near Eastern collection.
