Porcelain bowl with underglaze blue decoration. This ‘min yao’ bowl has rounded sides, an out-turned rim and a tapering foot. It is crudely made. The main band of decoration outside consists of chrysanthemums and rocks. Inside there is a plant spray in a double ring in the centre and at the rim a diaper band. The greyish-blue glaze is well worn with a wide crackle and the partially glazed base has fired yellowish-beige.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Similar sketchy calligraphic brushwork is found on a bowl excavated from a Jingtai period tomb in Jingdezhen. Bowls of this shape with similar sketchy underglaze blue decoration were excavated in the tomb of the octogenarian Luo Hengxin (1376-1457) and of his wife Mme Liu, buried together in 1459, the third year of Tianshun. In Luo’s burial these bowls were used as covers for pottery jars with four lugs at the neck.
