Porcelain bowl with underglaze blue decoration encased in biscuit-fired relief and openwork. This bowl has an inner liner sketchily painted plain blue outside and inside with a full-frontal dragon in a double ring medallion and with two dragons chasing flaming pearls along the walls; a band of flower heads alternating with furry scroll work adorns the rim. The outer bowl has pierced cash diaper ‘linglong’-work walls with five openwork medallions containing biscuit figure scenes and a rim border of applied biscuit flower scroll on which birds perch alternately upright and upside down. A white slip painted border of flower scroll decorates the lower part of the bowl. Inside the foot ring is a four-character mark in a double square painted in underglaze blue, which reads 玉 堂 佳 器 ‘Yu tang jia ai’ [Beautiful vessel for the Jade Hall].

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:’Linglong’ was originally an onomatopoeic phrase describing the tinkling of jade ornaments. As jades that were used for such chimes were cut very thinly and delicately and often reticulated, ‘linglong’ acquired the sense of fine openwork carving and the term was extended to other materials such as porcelain.
