Period:Ming dynasty Production date:1573-1620
Materials:porcelain, enamel,
Technique:glazed, underglazed, incised,
Subjects:flaming jewel dragon
Dimensions:Diameter: 15 centimetres Height: 9.20 centimetres
Description:
Porcelain bowl with incised, overglaze yellow on an aubergine ground decoration. This bowl has unusually deep rounded sides and stands on a high straight foot. Its base is convex and is marked beneath the glaze with a spindly six-character Wanli reign mark in a double ring. Inside it is simply ornamented with a double ring in the centre and a single line around the rim in blue beneath a blue-tinged glaze. Outside it is incised with two open-jawed dragons chasing each other, both pursuing their flaming pearls among ‘ruyi’ clouds, with a key-fret border around the foot. Not only is the colour combination of amber-yellow dragons on an aubergine ground extremely rare, but also the white porcelain body has been exploited as a third colour to emphasize the edge of the rim, dragon’s claws, spine, horns and eyes, by the application of a transparent glaze. The pupils of the dragons’ eyes are highlighted by black dots. Sadly the bowl has been badly broken. Once riveted together, it has now been restuck and refilled.
