These ritual objects were formed in shapes of Indian origin or, as in this case, decorated with motifs originating in India. Here, overlapping lotus petals are carved around the sides of the bowl. Buddhist devotees may have used this bowl as an alms bowl or for setting water on an altar. Xing ware can be hard to distinguish from Ding ware but generally it has a colder, bluer tone through its transparent glaze.
