Description:
Bowl with incised and moulded decoration beneath a monochrome white glaze. This deep-sided thickly potted bowl has rounded sides, an everted rim and a spreading foot ring. Inside its broad centre it is incised with an S-shaped double-ended ruyi cloud motif. The sides are moulded with two phoenix, both with open wings and beaks but with different long scrolling tails separated by similar single ruyi clouds. It has been proposed that the male phoenix has the scrolling tail and the female the five-feathered tail. The bowl is covered with a glossy monochrome white glaze with gritty flaws. It has a deep foot and the base is recessed further than the join of bowl to foot. The base is glazed.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Although similar to the Yuan dynasty luanbai wares, this bowl is covered with a thick yellowish-white glaze. Blue-white glaze was more common in the Hongwu era as a result of kiln firing conditions. An identical bowl is in the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, London (PDF A.451). Such white bowls may have been used for official ceremonies, but equally could have been used for the consumption of food.
