Description:
‘Gui’-shaped porcelain bowl with incised decoration and ‘qingbai’ glaze. This ‘gui’-shaped bowl has rounded sides which curve inwards before gently flaring out at the rim and stands on a thick tapering foot. Incised decoration is limited to the exterior. An unusual lotus plant, alternately blooming and in bud, is depicted growing from an undulating stem below. The rim is ornamented with an incised band of classic scroll. Double incised lines frame this band and the foot and underline the scrolling stem. The bowl is covered inside and out with a delicate ‘qingbai’ glaze.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Although the base bears no reign mark, this small heavily potted ‘gui’-shaped bowl is very similar to the Museum’s blue-and-white ‘gui’-shaped bowl dated 1612 (BM 1961.0216.1). This handleless ‘gui’ shape appears to have been introduced to the porcelain repertoire in the late Ming period. Censers of this form ultimately derive from bronze food-offering vessels of the Shang and Western Zhou dynasties, many of which have additional side handles.
