They have reticulated roundels in the sides with alternating cash and scale patterns. Surrounding these inside and out are panels with white ‘ruyi’ clouds in the corners on a blue ground and a border of white scroll reserved in blue around the rim. They are beautifully painted in underglaze blue with a boy playing the flute while riding a water buffalo in a watery landscape at night, and with a servant bringing a goose to his master, who is seated on rocks beneath a willow tree in a garden.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:The boy playing a flute on the back of a water buffalo is a popular traditional Chinese theme, idealizing the pastoral life. For example, a poem called ‘The Herd Boy’ by the Song dynasty poet Lu Yu (AD 1125-1209), translated by Arthur Waley, describes observing such a boy standing with naked feet on the back of an ox.The scholar who is approached by a servant carrying a goose may represent the famous Wang Xizhi (c. 303-c. 361). Also known as ‘the Calligraphic Sage’, he was said to have admired the fluidity of movement of the necks of geese, which consequently inspired his own calligraphy. He epitomized the new man of letters for the seventeenth-century literati and is credited with writing the “Preface to the Gathering at the Orchid Pavilion” in 353. Such an archaistic subject combined with Wang Xizhi’s legendary untrammelled nature would have been popular with the literary elite of the time.
