It is painted with deer in a landscape in late Ming-style underglaze blue and is covered with a pale coffee-coloured glaze. The base carries an inscription in underglaze blue which reads竹石居 (zhu shi ju ‘bamboo rock retreat’). Zhu shi ju was the studio name of Shan Keqi, alias Yefu, a native of Gaomi, Shandong province who became jinshi in 1781 obtaining his metropolitan degree.
