The base carries an underglaze blue inscription which reads 萬福攸同 (wanfu youtong ‘May a myriad blessings be bestowed [on the noble men]’). The organisation of production at Jingdezhen changed radically during the Jiajing to Wanli (AD 1522–1620) era. Potters produced a wider variety of forms and designs and in larger numbers than at any previous period in Jingdezhen’s history. They also used less refined clay as supplies from the principal source in 馬鞍山 (Ma’an shan) in north western Jiangxi declined.
