Description:
Porcelain bowl with underglaze blue decoration. This bowl has rounded sides and a convex base, supported by a raised tapering foot ring. It is covered with a blue-tinged ‘orange-peel’ glaze pitted with pin-prick indentations and painted under the glaze with cobalt blue. Inside in the centre is a fruiting and flowering pomegranate spray in a double circle; in the cavetto a stylized lotus scroll below a key-fret border. Outside are two bands of stacked lotus petals below a wave border. The raised foot ring is edged with a double line.The base bears a six-character Xuande reign mark within a double circle.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:The pomegranate is a symbol of fertility because of its numerous seeds and the lotus has Buddhist associations. Identical bowls are in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, and in the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Art, New York.
