Description:
Porcelain Lianzi [lotus-seed] bowl with underglaze blue decoration. This lianzi [lotus-seed] bowl has deep conical sides which emerge from a very narrow foot ring and curve slightly inwards at the rim. The glazed base rises to a central nipple. Beneath a pure blue-white glaze it is painted in dark cobalt blue. Inside in the centre is a stylized four-petalled flower, surrounded by a band of flowers formed of dots. Encircling this is a ringlet of overlapping looped trefoils woven together. Around the rim is a diaper border on the inside and a band of simple key-fret outside. Sixteen individual lappets radiate from the foot ring, which is decorated with a band of undulating lines like contours on a map. The base is glazed.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Bowls such as this and BM 1952.0513.1 were made in the Yongle and Xuande eras at the imperial kiln at Jingdezhen. Some were sent to the Near East. For example, bowls of this type are in the Ardebil shrine, Iran.
