Porcelain bowl with rounded sides and straight rim. There is a medallion enclosing an image of Liu Hai with three-legged toad in a landscape in gilt in the centre of the interior, gilt floral scrolls around the interior and exterior walls, and single blue lines at the rim and the foot. There is a mark in underglaze blue on the base.

Liu Hai is revered as a popular god of prosperity. The bowl is decorated inside the cavetto and outside with cut out gold foil which was incised and fired at a low temperature. This decorative technique is known by the Japanese term 金襴手(‘kinrande gold brocade style’). The gold wears away from the porcelain which is why so much of the detail is missing.
