Description:
Porcelain bowl and cover with crackled glaze, underglaze blue and brown painting. This vessel has a deep-sided bowl which stands on a spreading foot ring and has a domed cover with an overhanging lip and large flattened knob. Both are covered with a crackled cream glaze inside, outside and on the base. On either side orchids are painted with brown flowers and blue foliage separated by a motif comprising four dots. The cover is decorated with a butterfly and a single flowering branch. The glossiness of the glaze has been eroded by the sea.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:In addition to forming an attractive ornament, this botanical motif symbolizes scholarly virtue and loyalty. It has been suggested by Julia Curtis that this motif may have political overtones for the scholar-literati class.
