Description:
Double-gourd-shaped porcelain bottle with underglaze blue decoration. This porcelain bottle is gourd-shaped, with the upper bulb formed into a pear-shaped vase with outwardly flaring neck, a globular lower bulb and a foot ring. The lower bulb shows a scholar, identified by his black gauze cap, wearing a round-necked long robe, pointing at the sun, attended by a servant with tonsured hair holding a fan. Surrounding them is a landscape with grass depicted by ‘V’ marks typical of the Chongzhen period. Above in the upper bulb are two tulips spaced by auspicious emblems.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Only one double-gourd bottle was found on the Hatcher shipwreck of c. 1643 and it also has tulips around the neck and a scene of figures scene below. The present bottle was probably made for export to Europe.
