The fine bluish colour of this glaze is in fact due to dissolved iron-oxide, together with very low levels of titanium dioxide. Titanium has a yellowing effect on glaze-colour and usually encourages a green tone in most Chinese celadons. A yellow cast can also come from coal-firing but the Ru ware potters seem to have practised wood-firing, even though most north Chinese kilns at this time were fired with coal. Archaeologists discovered a related slim-necked vase with flaring foot and mouth in the Qingliangsi kiln site.
