Description:
Black ware vase. Stoneware. The black glaze has a yellowish tinge near the foot where it has run thin. The floral decoration is achieved by painting with an iron-saturated glaze which fires reddish brown instead of black. Wares of this type made in north China at the Henan kilns producing Cizhou-type wares; and also in south China at kilns in Fujian.

Comments:Rawson 1992:This bottle is glazed with an iron-rich glaze (c. 5-6% iron oxide) and decorated with an iron-saturated glaze (over 6% iron oxide) in which the excess of iron has precipitated to the surface of the glaze and burnt, producing the rust-brown contrast. Compare with BM 1973.0726.279.
