Comments:The Modern Prints Society, formed in Guangzhou in 1934, was the most productive and longest lasting among the woodcut groups that sprang up across China in the 1930s. The first issue of Modern Prints appeared in December 1934. Altogether, 18 issues were published over a year and a half. With the exception of the first issue, 50 handmade copies were made of each one. In spring 1935, Modern Prints dedicated two issues to ‘folk customs’. The idea was to bring an avowedly democratic art form to bear on the life of common people. The cover image is titled Field Master (Tian shiye). Modern Prints documents the rapid changes and expansions by the woodcut group in its artistic conceptions and styles.
