Comments:The Mustard Seed Garden Painting Manual has been reprinted in China, Japan and Korea. This print shows a peony flower from the 1701 edition. The first Japanese edition (1979,0305,0.91) was published in 1748. In China the manual aimed to introduce mainly ‘scholarly’ painting to the townsmen of Nanjing. In Japan it was taken as the gateway to Chinese painting itself and to the art of full-colour printing.
