Comments:See AOA Correspondence (1929) – Letter, Mrs Wilfred Mathieson/R L Hobson, 14 December 1929. Mrs Mathieson writes that she had been asked to approach the BM by Lady Thiselton-Dyer to see if a home could be found for ‘a Thibetan Carved Slab that her late father Sir Joseph Hooker brought back somewhere about 1845 or 1847 from Thibet and gave to her late husband Sir William’. The object is described as ‘a stone slab estimated at 10’ x 10″. Mrs Mathieson adds that ‘the carving on it she [Lady Thiselton-Dyer] tells me is “Om mane padmi hum” in Thibetan characters. She thinks it is a block from which the words were printed in Thibet and it is a pretty heavy piece of stone…'[M. Caygill, 03 Dec 2008]
