Comments:Neolithic, c.2500BC-2000BC. This exceptional, smoothly polished blade has a straight upper horizontal edge with a slight ridge along its length. The long cutting edge is gracefully curved and bevelled on both sides, and the two short sides, rounded at the edges, slope outwards slightly. Along the short sides are three fine projecting ribs, an important feature that is found on Shandong Longshan period pieces, including an axe from Wulian xian. There are three holes along the upper edge, recalling the holes of the original knives, and a four hole centred on the blade at the butt suggests that it was held in a different position. All the holes are drilled from one side. There are blades of similar length and weight in a number of Western collections, but very little of similarly high quality has been found in excavations over the last thirty years. The strongly curved cutting edges of the many of these pieces indicate that they belong to the Neolithic rather than to the Erlitou period, at which time many of the jade knives had straight edges. The present piece and its companions probably derive from Shandong, but the question of origins is far from settled. Examples from Shaanxi are illustrated by Dai Yingxin and Teng Shu-p’ing. See Rawson 1995, p.186, cat.no.10.17. This large flat blade ridged along the top horizontal edge and bevelled to curved corners along the lower sharpened and gently concave edge. The rounded sides of slightly different lengths display three small ribs at either end and taper slightly upwards. There are four conical perforations, three evenly distanced near the top edge of the blade and the other to one end. Neolithic. Length 454mm width 91mm.
