Period:Neolithic Period Production date:4000BC-3000BC
Materials:stone
Technique:drilled, polished,
Dimensions:Diameter: 21.20 centimetres Thickness: 1.40 centimetres
Description:
Disc-bi of variegated stone of greenish, pink and light brown markings with traces of earth encrustation and calcification polished to a soft gloss. This irregularly rounded disc is thick and heavy with some surface pitting and chips around the straight edges. A perforation drilled from both sides leaves a ridge in the concentric opening.
IMG
Comments:This is carefully finished but has been damaged. Its edge is irregular and its surface slightly chipped and pitted. The central hole, drilled from both sides, has a ridge in the opening. The variegated colour of the stone, which is a tough metamorphic rock, but probably not nephrite, is typical of the material used for discs, a material that does not seem to have been appropriate for smaller finer plaques and pendants. However, the many subtle colours of the stone were certainly much prized. The stone is beautifully polished. See Rawson 1995, p.134, cat.no.4:5.
