Period:Unknown Production date:3300BC-2200BC
Materials:jade
Technique:polished, pierced,
Dimensions:Diameter: 18 centimetres
Description:
Disc-bi of opaque yellowish white and rust coloured stone with brown veining polished to a good gloss.
IMG
Comments:This thick slab-like disc has been well rounded with straight sides. On one side the stone is bright rust color whilst the reverse is creamy yellow color. The edges although displaying indentations these have been ground smooth. A central biconical perforation, though polished reveals an uneven inner surface. Neolithic. This is a quite exceptionally fine disc. Both outer and inner edges of the disc are smooth, and any slight dents or chips have also been smoothed down. The two faces are polished to the extent that they are very soft to the touch. This polish brings out clearly the strikingly different colours of the two sides. The central hole has been pierced from both sides and the join made slightly unevenly, a form of working typical of Liangzhu period discs. Although it is difficult to compare the flat surfaces of one jade with those of another illustrated in a book, a bi from tomb M20 at Zhejiang Yuhang Fanshan seems to come very close to the present piece. Because of its very fine quality this disc was probably one of the pieces placed at the centre of the body in a tomb. See Rawson 1995, p.132, cat.no.4.1.
