Comments:Rawson 1995:To the west of the main Liangzhu area, in Anhui Xuejiagang at Qianshan, were cultures that borrowed some aspects of the Liangzhu culture, such as the use of jade discs and rings as well as earring of jade and other fine stones. Jade discs also occur further west at the sites of Shanxi Xiangfen Taosi, Shaanxi Fengxiang, Shenmu and Yan’an and even in the Qijia culture of Shaanxi and Gansu.Clear, rather translucent stones are typical of the material employed for both discs and ‘cong’ in the west. Cutting marks are often visible on the discs, and their central holes are usually drilled from one, rather than two, sides. When the drilling was almost complete, the remaining central ring was often snapped out, leaving a fine ridge. At first the outer circumferences of the discs were shaped by hand, but over time large drills were evolved.Discs that appear in the Shang dynasty tombs, such as the tomb of Queen Fu Hao, seem to be products of this craft tradition using clear coloured stones. In the Western Zhou period the use of discs and rings was much less common until changes in ritual and burial jades in the ninth century BC prompted their revival,
