Comments:14th-15th century. This belt slide is formed as a naturalistic and elegant spray of flowers and foliage, with a slot between the front and the back sections through which a belt could pass. The lowest section of the plant spray falls in a loop at the bottom, from which a further strap could be hung. The jade was therefore capable of joining two belt sections at right angles. Such belt slides in effect replaced the earlier metal or jade section. The earlier forms seem closely dependent on metal, many examples having beaded borders derived from silver or gold. This form may have been introduced to China from the Liao and Jin states. Related pieces are found not only in Mongolia, but also much further west in the Crimea region. See Rawson 1995, p.340, cat.no.25.20.
