Comments:The beads divided into two levels, both levels finely incised in low relief with masks consisting of circles within oval eyes joined by a wide striated band, below which is a bevelled area above an oblong mouth decorated with scroll motifs. The masks are on a ground carved with curls and striations. The two beads differ slightly in size with the smaller one having extensions at either end; the beads display irregular vertical perforations. Neolithic. These two almost identical beads are much longer than they are wide. They have slightly irregular vertical perforations, drilled from both ends. Both beads are divided into two clearly delineated sections, each of which is devoted to a pair of monster faces. The whorl-shaped eyes of the monsters are in relief, the same relief being drawn down into the nose at the bottom of the bead. The whole area of the faces and the background is filled with fine incised lines, scrolls and striations. Many beads of all sizes have been found in Liangzhu tombs, and a large number of them are decorated with faces. Often, as here, the faces are arranged in two or more tiers. See Rawson 1995, pp.144-145, cat.no.5.11.
