Comments:Published PDF date : Southern Song 12th-13thC Room 95 label text:PDF 6Hexagonal basin with six feetThe shape of this deep hexagonal basin on six feet is extremely unusual among the Chinese ceramics of this period that have survived. Perhaps the Southern Song court commissioned it based on a metalwork vessel, for which straight edges and an angular profile would appear to be a more natural shape than for a ceramic. The use of the basin is unclear. Possibly it was made for the emperor as a stand for a six-sided guan ware flowerpot with drilled drainage holes in the base and filled with soil to grow plants in. Alternatively it may have been used directly for growing bulbs.
