Description:
Very large famille rose basin. Deep oval body with inside four rococo cartouches enclosing two pairs of seated chinoiserie figures drinking tea and smoking a long clay pipe, after a design influenced by Cornelius Pronk. Floral garlands at the broad flaring rim. The exterior has similar garlands on a diaper-ground and a band of scallop shells at the shoulder with turquoise diaper. (Related to Franks 588).

Comments:This basin matches a water cistern donated by A.W. Franks (Reg.no. F.588). An identical basin described as having “The Potentate” design is in the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts ( see Yale 2011, p. 596)
