Comments:Neolithic period, possibly Longshan or Erlitou culture c. 2000BC. With an almost straight cutting edge and only slightly flaring sides, this jade is in the form of a rectangular tablet. The butt is irregularly finished and there are two holes, slightly out of alignment on the butt end. The piece is well worked with the sides and cutting edge polished to sharp edges; the surfaces are also very finely polished to bring out the excellent quality of the stone and the exceptional translucence. Like 201 [2014,AsiaLoan,1.80] this is a simplified form of axe, polished much more thinly than an axe would have been. Both the thin section and the fine polish serve to highlight the luminous green colour. Excavated examples of such jade tablets are rare, but they are likely to have been used in the Longshan and Erlitou periods. Some rather more substantial tablets have come from Erlitou sites. See Rawson 1995, p.183, cat.no.10.16. The sides and cutting end have been polished to sharp edges. Two conical perforations are close to the butt end with the smaller one slightly off median. Early Shang.
