Description:
Standing man finial of very pale green jade with some brown mottling finished to a soft polish. The bi-convex finial is carved showing a man wearing a raised elaborate headdress with side extensions atop striated hair. The face is portrayed with incised eyes and striated brows with ridged and prominent nose and mouth. The figure is dressed in a long waisted robe showing folds in front and geometric designs at the lower edge at the back. The man has well-defined hands clasped in front of him. There are four small perforations forming two channels running from the back of the hat through to the top of the hat. A drilled channel at the base of the man could be used for fitting the piece as a finial.

Comments:Shang. See Keverne 1991 and Min Chiu 1990. This figure has a large round and rather flat face, with eyes, eyebrows, a rounded nose and a small mouth. On his head is a tall hat, rising to a ridge, with flaps that are visible on either side of the head below the level of his ears. The man’s hands are folded in front of him, and he wears a robe hanging in folds from the waist, with a l long ‘knee-cover’ below the hands. The robe is also carefully depicted on the back with pleated folds. There are three perforations on the back, of which two are double. A hole in the base suggests that the figure might have been used as a finial. The way in which the garment hangs below the man’s hands has prompted Hayashi Minao to place this type of jade figure within a small group that he has dated to the Western Zhou, following the find of such a figure in a Western Zhou tomb in the suburbs of Luoyang. Other figures in Hayashi Minao’s group include a figure formerly in the David Weill Collection, Paris, two figures in the British Museum and a figure wearing a hat, vaguely reminiscent of the hat on the present example in the Winthrop Collection, Harvard University. See Rawson 1995, p.282, cat.no.19.1.
