Comments:Possibly Song dynasty. This finial consists of an oval bird’s head with a long pointed beak and small bulging eyes outlined by curving ridges. There are also volutes at its beak. There is an oval hole in its neck for attaching it to some other item. Nothing else like this head has been published to date. See Rawson 1995, p.383, cat.no.28.2. The bird has been depicted with a projecting brown and straight long pointed beak and carved with small rounded eyes with volutes extending from the rear of the eyes. Volutes are also delineated curling upwards from under the jaw. An oval extension following the shape of the neck forms an aperture for attachment. Sung. Length 64mm height 27mm.
