[Recent Exploration of the Remaining Stone of the Han Dynasty Marquis]
The stone remains of the Han Dynasty Marquis, with a height of 84.3 centimeters and a width of 81.6 centimeters. Rubbings of official script, mounted into a shaft, 74 cm vertically and 78.5 cm horizontally, with 196 characters stored. Record 16 lines of text, with each line ranging from fourteen to five characters. The shadow of the stele is covered with words such as “planting trees”. No month or year. The monument is named after the words “The Son of the Duke of the Dynasty” on the first line. The word “Chao” has been damaged, and the Duke of Chao has almost become a Duke of a certain dynasty, but it is no longer testable. The inscription on the tablet records the official traces of the deceased during his lifetime, the cause of his death, and the sadness of his family members, with a rich literary flavor
This monument was unearthed near Xi’an, Shaanxi Province in 1914, and has been collected by Yan Ganyuan and Zhou Jimu successively. It is now housed in the Palace Museum. The calligraphy type “Cao Quan Stele” is rigorous and beautiful, with strong and varied waves. When discussing this monument, Qin Wenjin said, “The style of the calligraphy is between Confucius and Shi Chen, which is inferior to its richness and strength. It is also beautifully carved.”
