Red Cloth Embroidery Double Happiness Dragon Phoenix Colorful Cloud Descendants Wandai Pattern Kang Carpet, Qing Guangxu, 463 cm long and 330 cm wide
This blanket is a woolen embroidered kang blanket used by Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty during his wedding. Its embroidery features a distinct Cantonese style, with overlapping and raised embroidery patterns surrounded by gold threads and rich and bright colors. The main stitch methods are the following bite stitch, flat stitch, overlapping scale stitch, and windmill stitch, all of which are characteristics of Guangdong embroidery. The overall design presents a festive style. The carpet edge is decorated with ten thousand bat flowers and happy character lace, with patterns of gourds, plum blossoms, and longevity peaches. Bats and flowers symbolize wealth and happiness, while gourds symbolize many children and blessings, while longevity peaches represent longevity. The heart of the blanket is embroidered with a golden thread with the words “happy”, symbolizing the auspicious meaning of the dragon and the phoenix. Compared to the dragon and phoenix patterns of the early Qing Dynasty, the patterns of this period were relatively thin and slightly less plump. A large number of fire bead patterns and wishful cloud patterns on the carpet surface are wrapped around the main dragon and phoenix pattern, with a sense of perfect harmony and good luck. The four corners have bat and intestine patterns, symbolizing a concentric connection
The composition of the woolen blanket is clear and neat, with a rich and elegant expression, effectively reflecting the festive atmosphere of the emperor’s grand wedding
