Yellow Carved Silk Cloud Bat Longevity Robe is made during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, with a body length of 142 centimeters, a total length of 174 centimeters at both sleeves, a cuff width of 18 centimeters, a hem width of 116 centimeters, and a left and right train length of 78 centimeters. This robe has a round neck, a right lapel and a large lapel, with a train that opens from left to right, and is inlaid with middle sleeves, melanin sleeves, and a horseshoe shaped sleeve end. With yellow tapestry as the surface and lake pigment spun silk as the lining. The whole body is decorated with about one hundred characters of Tuanshou, with colorful flowing clouds and red bat patterns between them, symbolizing the auspicious meaning of “Hongfu Qitian” and “Longevity for a Hundred Years”. The lower decoration is decorated with sea water, river cliffs, and eight treasures with water patterns. Inlaid with stone cyan yarn collar and sleeve edge, embroidered with the pattern of “Happy Encounter”. The rich patterns and exquisite tapestry of the entire robe reflect the superb level of tapestry techniques during the Qianlong period
This robe is of the style of a dragon robe, but it does not have a dragon pattern. This dragon robe decorated with a longevity pattern is not found in the records of the Qing Dynasty clothing code, and is also unique among the large number of Qing Dynasty clothing collected in the Palace Museum. From the perspective of the shape and characteristics of the robe, such as bright yellow in color, decorated with a hundred longevity pattern, inlaid with a sleeve and a train that opens both sides, it should be a lucky robe worn by the Empress Dowager or Empress Dowager during the Qianlong period during the celebration of her birthday
The neckline is tied with a yellow stripe, with the official script: “A robe with a water pattern inscribed on the yellow engraved silk longevity character”, and the endorsement: “Received on September 28th, the thirtieth year of Qianlong reign.”.
