The formal robe has a train that opens from left to right, a twisted placket, horseshoe style sleeves, and a pink lining of dark floral silk. The fabric of the robe is light green satin, and the ground is woven with eight three fly satin patterns. The embroidery is of Bo Gu pattern, with a total of 8 groups of ancient porcelain vases with various flower arrangements: a white ground colored cloud dragon open vase embroidered on the front chest, with a bouquet of peonies inserted; Embroidered garlic vase and dragon pierced flower ear vase on each shoulder, with a bunch of roses and sunflowers inserted respectively; On the lower front, a blue and white treasure moon vase is embroidered on the left, with a bunch of chrysanthemums and hibiscus inserted respectively. On the right, a embossed dragon vase is embroidered, with a bunch of poppy flowers inserted; Embroidered animal ears on the back with a ring shaped vase and peony flowers inserted; In the lower rear picture, the left embroidered ear vase is inserted with camellias and plum blossoms, the right embroidered animal ear ring vase is inserted with begonia flowers. The vase is decorated with folded flowers and butterflies such as carnation, marigold, daffodils, autumn chrysanthemums, orchids, and begonia. The lower picture has sea water, river cliffs, and miscellaneous treasure patterns, implying “longevity, mountains, and the sea.”. The collar and sleeve edges are made of stone blue satin embroidered with peonies, symbolizing “wealth and honor in the Jade Hall.”. On the collar of the robe is a yellow signed ink inscription saying, “On the first day of December of the forty second year of Qianlong’s reign, a green satin embroidered flower cotton robe was received.”
The pattern of the formal robe is embroidered with colored wool, using a variety of needle techniques such as set needle, oblique winding needle, connecting needle, osmanthus flower needle, tying needle, rolling needle, seed punching needle, applying needle, and loop gold embroidery. The colors are rich, and the methods of three and four halos are adopted, with distinct layers. This robe is a masterpiece of Suzhou embroidery during the Qianlong period, with exquisite embroidery, uniform stitches, elegant colors, distinct themes, and orderly settings.
