[Rhinoceros Horn Carved Chi Handle Seawater Chi Pattern Cup]
Rhinoceros Horn Carved Chi Handle Seawater Chi Pattern Cup, mid Qing Dynasty, height 12 cm, caliber 16.4 × 11.6 cm
This device is carved from Asian rhinoceros horn. The cup is open, with an arc-shaped rim, and a beautiful cloud pattern around the rim of the interior. This cup is carved with nine dragons. The largest one grasps the rim of the cup tightly and bites the rim of the cup. The head is finely carved, with hair as fine as hairline, and sharp eyes. The body and tail of the dragon face right, stepping on the waves with its feet, cleverly forming one side of the cup handle. The flow part of the cup is arcuate, and a small dragon is carved on the inner wall. Looking back, you can see that your eyes are bright and vivid, and your legs and claws are powerful. The outer wall is carved in three parts, using techniques such as engraving, relief, and intaglio. The lower part is the sea water, with surging waves and splashing waves. The two dragon dragons look up and want to leave. The three dragons in the middle chase and play with each other, lively and with different postures. The upper part is surrounded by clouds rising from the sea, and a handle is formed along the handle of the dragon and reaches the top. In the mist, the two dragons leaned down, bowed and bared their teeth, making a lifelike gesture. The complex patterns, exquisite fabrication, and exquisite carving reflect the author’s profound cultural heritage and superb carving skills, making it a treasure in rhinoceros horn carving.
