The stone seal “difficult for you” is the seal of Emperor Yongzheng, which best reflects his state of mind during his reign
On the 22nd day of the first year of Yongzheng’s reign (1723), Prince Yun Xiang of Yi handed over a plaque written by Emperor Yongzheng in his handwriting, “It is difficult for you”, and a couplet written by the emperor, “Only one person can rule the world, not one for the world”. This plaque reflects the voice of Emperor Yongzheng and is also the creed of his actions. Up to now, the couplet written by Emperor Yongzheng is still hanging on the north wall of the West Warm Pavilion of the Heart Cultivation Hall in the Forbidden City. However, the original “hard for you” plaque was later replaced by the “diligent and virtuous” plaque. The reason why Yongzheng sighed that “it is difficult to be a king” is closely related to his experience and era. “It is difficult for you” comes from “The Analects of Confucius · Zilu”: “It is difficult for you to serve as a minister. If you know how difficult it is for you, it is not easy to prosper the country with almost a word?” Emperor Yongzheng not only made a plaque of “it is difficult for you”, but also ordered people to engrave a number of seals of “it is difficult for you”, which are stamped on the imperial books and ancient paintings to inspire themselves not to forget their responsibilities as the emperor.
