[The Thangka of Jiebojia and Amit Venerable]
The Thangka of Jiebojia and Amit Venerable, 16-17th century, Beijing, Buben, colored, 140 cm high, 84 cm wide, 86 cm vertical and 54 cm horizontal. The old collection of the Qing Palace
At the top of the picture, sitting on the Yingtai with the scriptures in both hands, tasting tea with the disciples and commenting on the scriptures are those who teach the Buddha. Bodhisattva appears on the upper left of the Venerable Buddha, surrounded by green bamboo forests, which is rare in Tibetan Thangkas, but often appears in the writings of Han Arhat painters to express the emptiness of Buddhism. At the bottom of the picture is the most recognizable Amit among the sixteen Buddhists. He holds the Bodhi Pagoda in his hand and looks at the monkey offering peaches in front of him. The elder disciple on the side is shaving the newly converted disciple. The dark-brown one may be an Indian monk.
