[Sixth Panchen Thangka]

Sixth Panchen Thangka, 18th century, Beijing, cloth, color, 189 cm high, 103 cm wide, 117 cm vertical and 61 cm horizontal. The old collection of the Qing Palace
The sixth Panchen Lama, Luo Sangbei Dan Yixi (1738-1780), traveled thousands of miles in the forty-fifth year of Qianlong’s reign (1780), arrived in Chengde from Shigatse, Tibet, to pay homage to Emperor Qianlong, and attended the celebration of Emperor Qianlong’s 70th birthday. In November of that year, he died of illness at the Xihuang Temple in Beijing
In the middle of the picture, the Sixth Panchen Master, dressed in the official clothes of the Qing Dynasty, has a peaceful face. He holds the vase with his left hand and makes a statement with his right hand. He sits on the throne of the dragon head with his hands folded, and the green mountains and waters are dotted around the throne. The Buddha of Infinite Life sits upright in the auspicious cloud at the top. On the left is the Vajra Mahavira, the leader of the esoteric religion, and on the right is the Lassangyixi, the fifth Panchen Lama of the ancestors. In the center of the lower boundary, the six-arm permanent protection method is painted. On the left is the Devil of Surrender, and on the right is the Right Xiangtian Mother. The painting strokes are fine. The picture is framed with lotus pattern woven gold satin, and the decoration is gorgeous. On the back of the portrait, there is a white damask sign with a four-body inscription in Manchu, Han, Mongolian and Tibetan on the ink, in which the Chinese text reads: “On July 21 of the forty-fifth year of Qianlong’s reign, the holy monk Panchen Erdeni came to Tibet for worship, and the painting academy was ordered to offer the painted image to stay, and to worship it for ever, to prove the truth.” This Thangka was painted by Emperor Qianlong in memory of the sixth Panchen emperor, and it is a realistic portrait with historical significance.
