Sakya Panzhida (1182-1251), a famous Gonggajian Zan, the fourth generation founder of Sakya Sect, is a famous scholar and poet in Tibetan history. Since childhood, his uncle Zabajian praised the extensive learning of the secret teachings. Since the age of 23, he has followed the Kashmiri eminent monks and others to study the five Ming and Ming dynasties, and won the title of Ban Zhida. He has published many works, such as “Three Laws and Instruments”, “Saga Motto” and so on. In the second year of the reign of Emperor Dingzong of the Yuan Dynasty (1247), Gongga Jianzan, as the local representative of Tibet, met with Kuoduan, the son of the Mongolian emperor Wokuotai, in Liangzhou, and agreed to set up an official in Tibet to collect tribute and other conditions. He wrote to the leaders of the Tibetan monks and customs twice to persuade the Tibetan people to surrender to Mongolia, ending the separatist situation in the Tibetan region since the end of the Tang Dynasty, and making outstanding contributions to Tibet’s integration into the Yuan Dynasty and the great cause of the reunification of the motherland. At the same time, the Sakya sect has also gained the position of religious leader in the Tibetan Wei region
The middle of the Thangka depicts the young image of Sakya Panzhida, handsome and unrestrained, dressed in apricot cassocks, wearing a red domed hat, with the right arm raised and the left arm extended, in a posture of arguing for sutras, with a peaceful expression. In the background, monks worship Maitreya Buddha. On the upper left is the Manjusri Bodhisattva, who cultivates himself, and on the upper right is the Guru Zaba Jianzan. At the bottom left of the picture is a four-armed dark sky, and at the bottom right is a subdued Taoist priest listening to his teachings. There is a Tibetan inscription written in gold under the Thangka, the main idea of which is: to subdue the Great Black Buddha on all sides of the outside world and achieve the cause of Sakyamuni Panzhida with the help of the Great Supreme One Zabajian Zan and the compassion of the Dharma Wheel.
