Cotton socks are high. The upper of the sock is made of white damask, the sock tube is made of light green silk, the sock mouth is inlaid with stone blue lotus cloud weave gold satin edge, and the sock is filled with silk floss. The hosiery part is embroidered with colorful silk and gold thread with phoenix pattern flying between the clouds. This phoenix pattern can only be enjoyed by the queen with the highest status
High socks should be worn in high boots. The old Manchu file records that the emperor’s reward to his subjects before the Qing Dynasty’s entry into the customs was “a sock with a slanted leather boot”. The Manchu Archives also recorded that in the eighth year of Tiancong’s reign (1634), Emperor Tai Chi once awarded more than 60 pairs of boots to Banger Fuge, including “three pairs of boots with gold flowers, nine pairs of boots with Japanese satin, three pairs of sewn boots, thirty-two pairs of satin boots, eight pairs of Maoqing boots, and ten pairs of leather boots. Three pairs of sewn socks, two pairs of socks with embroidered satin, and two pairs of socks with python satin”. It can be seen that Manchu women also wore boots as men to meet the needs of riding and shooting before the entry of the Qing Dynasty
The age of high stockings is the Kangxi period, reflecting the vestiges of Manchu women wearing boots in the early Qing Dynasty. Since then, due to the gradual decline of the trend of riding and shooting in the Qing Dynasty, the Manchu women were popular in wearing high-soled shoes, and the high-soled socks that matched the boots were hard to find in the rich clothing categories of the empresses in the Qing Dynasty.
