The Jiuhua Beautiful Painting Axis, painted by Wang Hui in the 42nd year of Kangxi’s reign of the Qing Dynasty (1703), is 133.5 cm in length and 57.9 cm in width
This picture depicts mountains and lush forests. From the title, we can see that the texturing method of the mountains and rocks and the brush of the trees in the painting imitate the rhyme of Wang Meng, one of the “four schools of the Yuan Dynasty” (No. Huang Heshan Qiao), but the brush method is more flexible and has its own appearance. This picture shows the characteristics of the author’s landscape painting in his later years and his interest in pursuing ancient style
The paragraph of this page reads: “On the third day after Guiwei’s death, he imitated Huang Heshan’s woodcutter pen and presented it to Mr. Mei Weng’s father, Mr. Tai, for fun. Haiyu’s farming smoke scattered to Wang Hui.” The next day, another paragraph was written, sealed with “Haiyu” Zhu Wenyin, “Cangjiang White-haired” Bai Wenyin, “Wang Huizhi” Bai Wenyin, “Shi Guzi” Zhu Wenyin, “Shi Gu” Zhu Wenyin, “Laiqing Pavilion” Zhu Wenyin, “Genyan Yelao’s seventy years old” Zhu Wenyin. “Guiwei” is the forty-second year of Kangxi (1703), when Wang Hui was 72 years old.
