[Yu Zhi Ding Feng Mu Tu Volume]

Feng Mu Tu Volume, Qing Dynasty, Yu Zhi Ding Tu, paper, ink, 39 cm vertical, 136.5 cm horizontal
The title of this picture is “Fengmu Map”, and the caption reads: “Ding Chou Jiaping was written by Mr. Ziweng, and Yu Zhiding in Guangling.” The seal is “Yu Zhiding” and “Shen Zhai”. This volume is inscribed by Zha Shengshan, with Jiang Chenying’s book at the beginning. There are eighteen poems (notes) written by Song Luo and Zhu Yizun on the back paper. Ding Chou was in the 36th year of Kangxi’s reign in the Qing Dynasty (1697), and Yu Zhiding was 51 years old
“Fengmu” has the meaning of mourning for relatives in ancient times. Wang Ying’s father died in the year of Dingchou in Kangxi, so in December of that year, Yu Zhiding was invited to draw this picture of filial piety for Wang Ying
In the picture, Wang Ying’s hair is loose, her face is sad, and she is wearing a plain robe, standing up in awe. Behind me, the pines are tall and straight, the forest is full of smoke, the hills and slopes are steep, the streams are surrounded, and the trees and dead grass are rustling in the cold wind
The faces of the characters in the painting are haloed with light ink layer by layer to highlight the concave and convex feeling, and the hair whiskers are written with very thin ink lines. The clothing pattern is drawn with elegant “blue leaf tracing”. The painting method of the tree is more meticulous. The trunk uses double hooks to write the outline, and the scales and skins to show its texture. Some leaves use double hooks to clip the leaves, and some use the pen to write. The slope stone is chapped with a dry brush, and the distant mountains are swept out with thick ink
The picture is set off by the bleak and lonely atmosphere, and the scenery is used to set off the feeling, creating a sad and quiet artistic conception, which vividly shows the sadness of the image of the Lord, as Zhu Yizun said: “Honglu wrote the cold wood, and the rustle of the wind moved the forest…. The new picture starts from the beginning, and the bottom of the forest is full of tears.”
