In the Qing Dynasty, the royal family attached great importance to Dongzhu, a freshwater pearl produced in the lower reaches of the Songhua River and its tributaries in the northeast. It was stipulated that only the palace could control it, and the princes and ministers could not use it at will. The large and round ones are decorated on the crown or the court beads, and the special-shaped beads are used for inlaying.
