[Zhao Zhiqian’s Regular Script Five-Character Couplet]
The Regular Script Five-Character Couplet, Qing Dynasty, Zhao Zhiqian’s book, paper, 189 cm vertically and 56.5 cm horizontally
This picture is a couplet of the sentences of predecessors. The couplet reads: “The ambition is flying all over the world, and the age is five dragons.” The first couplet reads: “The verses of Tao Zhengshiguo’s works are collected as Yizhai’s brother’s book.” The second couplet reads: “Tongzhi is nine years old in the mid-summer month of the afternoon of the Geng Festival, and Zhao Zhiqian remembers it.” The second couplet reads: “Kuaiji Zhao Zhiqian’s seal of longevity” and “Dingguang Buddha’s reincarnation falls into the world of mortals”. No hidden seal. In the ninth year of Tongzhi (1870), Zhao was 41 years old
The style of this couplet is vigorous, the folded pen is wide, and the ink is warm and moist. It still retains the meaning of Yan Lugong’s regular script, but its natural and smooth momentum has the charm of Deng Shiru. It is said to be the three changes of the Deng School. This couplet is a typical example of stele calligraphy in the late Qing Dynasty, and it is also a masterpiece of regular script in Zhao Zhiqian’s middle age. The “Yizhai” in the preceding paragraph should be the same person as the recipient of the seal script, namely Chen Yiqian in Shanghai.
