[Wang Shishen’s Three Friends of the Spring Wind Axis]
The Three Friends of the Spring Wind Axis, Qing Dynasty, Wang Shishen’s painting, paper, ink, 77.5 cm vertical, 37.9 cm horizontal
Style: “Three friends in the spring breeze. The scholar in the Qingshan Bookstore is cautious.” The seal is “Wang Shishen, a close friend”
The so-called “three friends” are plum, orchid and bamboo in the “four gentlemen”. Wang Shishen placed them in the wild steep cliffs, bathed in the spring breeze, and grew freely and tenaciously. This figure highlights a “growth momentum” in the layout. The picture starts with a half view, and the lower right part is painted with two sloping rocks. The stone surface is covered with thick weeds. A plum tree grows up from the gap between the two rocks in a zigzag way, with branches towering out of the cliff and plum flowers blooming. Several clusters of tender bamboos on the rocks on the downhill slope of the tree roll in the wind, and the bamboo poles tilt to the right and crisscross with plum trees. A cluster of orchids on the top of the boulder hung upside down on the sloping stone surface, and the orchid leaves were flexible and stretched, meeting with plum blossoms. Plum, orchid and bamboo echo or interlace, and the composition seems unstable, but in fact it is balanced. In particular, the regular script in the center of the picture plays an indispensable role in balancing the picture and is an important part of the picture. The painting method of this painting is mainly waving, and rarely chapped. The brushwork is beautiful, and the ink color is elegant, giving people a feeling of refreshing.
