This atlas is based on Cao Xueqin’s famous work A Dream of Red Mansions in the Qing Dynasty. According to the description of 12 women in the novel, such as Lin Daiyu, Xue Baochai, Shi Xiangyun, Jia Yingchun, Jia Xichun, Li Wan, and Qiao Jie, the author vividly portrays their vivid images, so he named the picture “Twelve Golden Hairpins”
A Dream of Red Mansions, as a classic novel with deep ideological and artistic content, has attracted the attention of all walks of life and quickly become the subject of various artistic expressions. The figure painters have drawn illustrations, picture albums, picture pages, etc. for the novel. At the age of 25, he was invited to draw a volume of “A Dream of Red Mansions” with folk style. At the age of 40, he was invited by Mr. Lanting to draw this 12-page atlas, with one person for each painting, and he traveled among rocks, trees and houses. According to the description of the novel and his own understanding of the work, the author describes the age, identity, behavioral characteristics and spiritual temperament of different characters. Although the characters in the picture are not marked with names, they can be confirmed through the pictures. For example, the woman holding a hoe to bury flowers under the tree has the temperament of “wind and dew are clear and sad”, and she is Lin Daiyu who is “proud”; Shi Xiangyun lies drunk among the peony flowers; Jia Yuanchun is dressed in gorgeous clothes and walking on the steps of the palace; It was Jia Xichun who sat by the window and sipped the paper; It was Qin Keqing who held me in meditation under the lamp; It was Xue Baochai who held the fan and flapped the butterfly; Miaoyu sits beside the book and is weak; It was Qiao Jie and others who helped Zhang Gu around the Chaimen
In The Painting of Tongyin by Qin Zuyong of the Qing Dynasty, Fei Danxu said that “the beauty of the beauty of the scenery is more beautiful in the beauty of the scenery. One tree and one stone, although not deep into the ancient method, are quite natural in a natural way.” In the picture, the scenic rocks and trees drawn by boneless method create a specific environment for the activities of the characters in a concise and clear way, which helps to reveal the inner spiritual feelings of the characters, while making the picture full and interesting. The figure painted is a typical image of the late Qing lady painting, which conforms to the aesthetic fashion of the lady painting at that time. The duck egg face, willow eyebrows, nose like hanging gall, mouth like cherry, and lips with vermilion. This kind of beauty painting style is not only actively displayed by the literati painters such as Gai Qi and Fei Danxu, but also common in the folk New Year pictures of Tianjin Yangliuqing, Shandong Weixian and Suzhou Taohuawu. Some of the figures in the picture have mottled black stains on their faces and dresses, which is because the white powder used by the author contains metal components and lead returns under the action of oxidation.
