The flat square is the most important tool for Manchu women to comb “two heads”, which is equivalent to the flat hairpin on the bun of Han women. It not only has a simple decorative function, but also can control the bun from scattering. Manchu women combed “two heads”. At first, they divided the real hair into two and fixed it by flat square. In the late Qing Dynasty, the two heads were changed to be made of green satin, which was installed on the top of the head, and the connection with the head base made of real hair also depended on flat square. The materials used to make flat square include jade, jadeite, tortoiseshell, as well as jade inlaid with gold, jade inlaid with jade or other jewelry inlaid with gold, or gold chiseling, silver gilding, etc.
